Gina Triplett and Matt Curtius
"You Take a Curtsy, I'll Take a Bow"

Gina Triplett, who hails from Delano, Minnesota and Matt Curtius of Philadelphia, met while attending the Maryland Institute College of Art. After college, they moved to Brooklyn where the couple each diligently pursued their individual artistic careers.

In Gina's case, her unique, playful style quickly brought her recognition from the Society of Illustrators, Print Magazine, among many others, and commissions from numerous clients such as Rheingold Beer, Rolling Stone Magazine and RCA Records, to name a few.

Over the years, as an artist couple and as studio partners, it was only natural that they develop a discourse about their work. This conversation evolved to take place on the playing field of canvases where their intimate understanding of each other's ideas and processes tumble, collide and fuse into new expressions, not totally one or the other, but something, ultimately, that transcends them both.

Their joint efforts were noticed by an art director for Lamar Snowboards which commissioned a variation of "Bucket of Confetti" to appear on a line of snowboards. A technical aspect had them switch from oil paint, a very slow-drying medium, to acrylics - which have a much faster drying time, allowing for rapid modifications. The switch to acrylics has opened a new avenue of their continued development.

Although neither Gina nor Matt have artists in their family backgrounds, Matt comments that, "We each grew up in a similar atmosphere in the respect that while art was not modeled as a life-consuming pursuit, creative thinking, self sustainability, and hard work are things that have directly been passed from our parents to our everyday lives."

Triplett and Curtius recently traded up from their Park Slope apartment to a house in Chestnut Hill in Matt's hometown of Philadelphia where Matt single-handedly undertook a major renovation in order to create a professional studio space for them to expand their collaborations.

In short order, this plan paid off as, last summer, they were the recipients of a Geraldine R. Dodge Scholarship to attend the Fine Arts Work Center in the legendary artistic incubator of Provincetown, Massachusetts. The paintings of Gina Triplett and Matt Curtius, currently on view at Gallery Saint Martin, are the fertile result of this distinguished opportunity.
