Monique Seyler
"Nature Merging With Impulse"

The New York Times art reviewer, William Zimmer, described a work from Monique Seyler's Cold Spring series as "nature merging with impulse…where colors conspire to create a genuine chill and the sensation of the ocean in winter."

Monique strives to create a balance of realism and abstraction in her acrylic and pastel works on paper. New forays into verre eglomisé, or painting in reverse on sheet of mylar (instead of the traditional glass,) have yielded a series of monoprints that further delve into the melding of the conscious and subconscious.

Although she studied art at The Art Students League and School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, Monique credits living and working in Asia with bringing a strong oriental aesthetic and overall philosophy of simplicity to her work. After graduating with honors with a degree in Asian Studies from Seton Hall University, Monique worked for a number of years as a "China Hand," acting as a liaison between professional exchange delegations and specialized tour groups to and from the People's Republic of China.

The contrast of life she experienced between the East and West is what led her to author a work of literary fiction entitled 'China Nights' which is currently under agented submission to several New York publishing houses. In addition to operating Gallery Saint Martin and doing her own artwork, she is currently working on illustrations for this book.

Monique Seyler's work has been featured in numerous one-person and group exhibits including several awards for Works on Paper for the National Association of Women Artists juried exhibits, as well as inclusion in "Art as Spectacle," a juried exhibit at Katonah Museum of Art juried by Thelma Golden, Curator and Direction of the Branches of the Whitney Museum of American Art. The venerable Elaine Benson Gallery in Bridgehampton New York, Brownson Gallery of Manhattanville College, Pace University, and the Westchester Arts Council have included Monique's work in their selected group exhibits.

The Zimmerli Museum at Rutgers University holds one of Monique's Cold Spring series in its permanent collection. In addition to numerous private collections, her work can also be found in the corporate collection of Sanford C. Bernstein, Inc.

Monique Seyler has written extensively on the arts for a number of syndicated publications, has served as Independent Curator for tri-state exhibits, and continues her explorations into "indigenous designs derived from the landscape itself."
