Nic Coviello
"An auspicious reunion."

From his first exhibit at the New York World’s Fair to his current role as Lecturer in Digital Design at the University of Pennsylvania, artist Nic Coviello has been exploring the natural world – and bringing forth botanical imagery filtered through his highly personal, technology-assisted artistry.

The natural world is a time-honored muse, to be sure. One would be hard-pressed to imagine that there’s anything new to be found in this source – or that it could survive if be paired with modern techniques. But, as Philadelphia art critic Susanna Jacobson has observed, Nic manages to make “…nature feel like a lost acquaintance with whom we’ve just been auspiciously reunited.”

His recent one-person exhibit at Nexus Gallery consisted of multiples: silk-screen-on aluminum panels that filled several walls with their tapestry-like effect. In this case, though, the whole was not necessarily greater than the sum of its parts. Each panel could stand on it’s own as individual meditations on Nic’s engagement with form, line and the subtleties of color.

There is often an austere, asian aesthetic to Nic’s work which is enhanced through computer-assisted design. The resulting imagery is a kind of high-tech orientalism.

Even in his black-and-white works, there’s a sense of airiness, of a fleeting atmosphere. His materials span a wide gamut from delicate rice paper (some pieces are illuminated from behind,) to polished aluminum panels that offer their own experiences of shifting light.

Nic Coviello’s work has been exhibited internationally (in Bulgaria, Latvia & Estonia and South Korea) as well as extensively in the U.S. (from Philadelphia to Boston.)

Gallery Saint Martin is pleased to present an intimate collection of Nic Coviello’s works on paper and aluminum.
